Next, the Island became a yellow fever quarantine station. You will be astonished to hear the fascinating history of the Island.
Visitors can see the authentic prison building. It still stands on the Island and is used as a guest house. The guide will explain this interesting history in detail. Although it never became a prison hosting criminals, it’s started to be home for giant tortoises which were brought there from Seychelles in 1820. They were a gift from the Seychelles government. Explore the Giant Tortoises in Prison Island
These Giant Aldabra Tortoises is one of the famous tourist attractions found in Prison island Zanzibar. They can be roughly 122 cm length and with an average weight of 250 kg (550 pounds).
They’re known to be one among the longest-lived animals in the world; at Prison island, the oldest tortoise is estimated to be 196 years old.
These tortoises were originally brought from Seychelles islands during the 18th Century, and they were as a gift, at that time they were 4 tortoises, but now the number has been compounded.

Nakupenda Sandbank is located just off Stone Town. Around 20 minutes local boat riding from Stone Town.
